Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How do I start a drive session?

Open Road Shield and tap the Start Drive button. The app will begin monitoring your location for nearby speed cameras.

You can also enable Auto-Drive Detection in Settings, which automatically starts a session when the app detects you're driving.

Additionally, you can start a drive from:

  • The Lock Screen Live Activity
  • Home screen quick action (long-press the app icon)
  • Apple Watch companion app
  • Control Center widget
Why does Road Shield need my location?

Road Shield uses your GPS location to calculate your real-time distance and direction to speed cameras. This is core to how the app works.

Your location never leaves your device. It is processed locally in real time and is not stored, recorded, or transmitted to any server. When you end a drive, location data is discarded from memory.

The app requests "Always" location access so it can continue alerting you when the screen is off during a drive. Background location is only active during an active drive session.

Why does Road Shield need "Always" location permission?

Speed camera alerts need to work when your phone is in your pocket or mounted with the screen off. "When In Use" permission would stop alerts the moment you lock your screen.

"Always" permission allows Road Shield to continue monitoring cameras in the background only during an active drive session. The app does not track your location outside of drives.

If you prefer, you can use "While Using the App" permission instead. Alerts will work as long as the app is visible on screen.

What countries are supported?

Road Shield currently supports speed cameras in Macedonia.

We plan to add support for additional countries in the Balkans region in future updates, including Kosovo, Greece, and Serbia.

Alerts and Driving

How do camera alerts work?

Road Shield provides progressive alerts as you approach a speed camera:

  • 500m — First warning (audio + haptic)
  • 300m — Second warning, escalated
  • 200m — Urgent warning
  • 100m — Final alert before the camera

Alerts include spoken warnings with the camera name and speed limit, sound effects, and haptic feedback. You can customize alert volume and style in Settings.

The app also considers your direction of travel — you only get alerts for cameras facing your direction, not cameras pointing at oncoming traffic.

Do alerts work without navigation (freestyle driving)?

Yes. Camera alerts work in both modes:

  • Freestyle driving — Just tap Start Drive and go. You'll get alerts for any camera you approach, regardless of your route.
  • Navigation mode — Set a destination and follow turn-by-turn directions. You'll get camera alerts along your route plus navigation instructions.
What are speed limit drop warnings?

Speed limit drops (available with the Pro plan) warn you when the posted speed limit decreases ahead. For example, transitioning from an 80 km/h zone to a 50 km/h zone.

This gives you time to slow down before entering the lower speed zone, reducing the chance of a fine even in areas without cameras.

What are high-risk monitoring zones?

High-risk zones (available with the Pro plan) are areas with elevated enforcement activity, complex intersections, or frequent speed changes. The app provides heightened awareness alerts when you enter these zones.

How is the camera database updated?

Road Shield automatically syncs the camera database approximately every hour while the app is running. Camera locations, speed limits, and enforcement zone data are downloaded from our server.

No personal data is sent during this sync — it's a one-way download of camera data only.

Live Activity and Apple Watch

How do I use the Live Activity?

The Live Activity starts automatically when you begin a drive session. It appears on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island (iPhone 14 Pro and later).

The Live Activity shows:

  • Distance to the next camera
  • Your current speed
  • Speed limit at the next camera
  • Alert status (safe, approaching, near, under camera)
  • Navigation progress (when navigating)

You can stop the drive directly from the Live Activity by tapping the stop button.

How does the Apple Watch app work?

The Apple Watch companion app mirrors the drive status from your iPhone. It shows distance to the next camera, your speed, and the alert status.

The Watch provides haptic alerts that tap your wrist when approaching cameras — useful when your phone is out of sight or on silent.

The Apple Watch add-on is a separate subscription that can be added to any plan.

Navigation

How does camera-aware routing work?

When you set a destination, Road Shield calculates multiple routes using Apple Maps and scores each one based on camera exposure:

  • Number of cameras on the route
  • Total distance through enforcement zones (red and yellow zones)
  • Overall distance and travel time

You can choose between the fastest route, the route with the fewest cameras, or a balanced option.

Can I use Road Shield alongside other navigation apps?

Yes. You can run Road Shield in the background for camera alerts while using Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze for navigation. The Live Activity and spoken alerts will work from the background.

Alternatively, use Road Shield's built-in navigation for an integrated experience with camera scoring.

Subscriptions

What's included in the free version?

The free preview includes:

  • Limited camera alerts (a set number over a rolling 7-day period)
  • Camera locations visible on the map
  • Basic speed display

Upgrade to a paid plan for unlimited alerts and additional features.

How do I manage or cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed through Apple. To change or cancel:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Tap your name at the top (Apple Account)
  3. Tap Subscriptions
  4. Find Road Shield and manage your plan

You can also manage subscriptions from the App Store app under your account icon.

How do I restore my purchases on a new device?

Open Road Shield, go to the subscription screen, and tap Restore Purchases in the top right. This will sync your active subscription from the App Store using your Apple Account.

Make sure you are signed in to the same Apple Account that was used for the original purchase.

Do subscriptions work across my devices?

Yes. Your subscription is tied to your Apple Account and works on any iPhone (and Apple Watch, if you have the Watch add-on) signed in to the same account.

Privacy and Data

Does Road Shield track my location?

No. Road Shield processes your location entirely on your device to calculate camera proximity. Your location is never stored, recorded, or sent to any server.

We do not use analytics services, advertising networks, or any form of user tracking. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.

What data syncs to iCloud?

If you have iCloud enabled, the following data syncs across your Apple devices:

  • Driving statistics (total drives, distance, cameras encountered)
  • Saved places (home, work, favorites, recent destinations)
  • Your profile display name

This data is encrypted by Apple in transit and at rest. You can disable iCloud sync for Road Shield in your device's iCloud settings.

Your location data, route history, and speed ticket details are not synced to iCloud.

How do I delete my data?

Since Road Shield stores all data locally on your device (with optional iCloud sync), deleting your data is straightforward:

  • Delete all local data: Uninstall the app. This removes everything from your device.
  • Delete saved places: Go to Settings within the app and delete individual places, or remove home/work.
  • Delete iCloud data: Go to iPhone Settings > Apple Account > iCloud > Manage Storage, and remove Road Shield data.

Troubleshooting

Alerts are not working

Check the following:

  1. Location permission: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Road Shield. Ensure it's set to "Always" or "While Using the App".
  2. Drive session active: Make sure you've tapped "Start Drive". The Live Activity should be visible on your Lock Screen.
  3. Volume: Check that your device volume is turned up and not on silent mode (unless you only want haptic alerts).
  4. Subscription: If you've exceeded the free preview limit, you'll need an active subscription for continued alerts.
  5. Camera data: Open the app and check the map. If no cameras are visible, try pulling down to refresh or check your internet connection.
The app is using too much battery

Road Shield uses GPS while a drive session is active, which does consume battery. To optimize:

  • End your drive session when you're done driving (tap Stop Drive)
  • The app does not use location when no drive session is active
  • If you have auto-drive detection enabled, it uses minimal power (motion sensors, not GPS) until a drive is detected

Battery usage comparable to other navigation apps is expected during active drives.

Live Activity is not showing

Live Activities must be enabled on your device:

  1. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode)
  2. Scroll down and enable Live Activities
  3. Also check Settings > Road Shield > Live Activities is toggled on

Live Activities require iOS 16.1 or later. Dynamic Island is available on iPhone 14 Pro and newer.

Apple Watch is not receiving alerts

Ensure the following:

  • Your Apple Watch is paired and connected to your iPhone
  • The Road Shield Watch app is installed (check the Watch app on your iPhone)
  • You have an active subscription with the Apple Watch add-on
  • A drive session is active on your iPhone

If issues persist, try restarting both your iPhone and Apple Watch.
